After Mark Driscoll resigned, we were all surprised that the church announced it was closing its doors, and that the surviving campuses would either close or continue as new independent churches. The one stipulation was that they could not be called “Mars Hill Church.”
It now appears that the brand “Mars Hill Church” and the intangible assets went with Mark Driscoll. After the rewriting of the bylaws, when the 22 elders voted away their ability to hold the senior leadership accountable, all the intangible assets of Mars Hill Church appear to have gradually ended up in Mark Driscoll’s hands.
So who resigned from what? We all thought that Mark Driscoll resigned from Mars Hill Church. It now appears that the Mars Hill Church Board of Advisors and Accountability resigned from Mark Driscoll.
